As you may remember, Sonny( father owl) disappeared for about 2 weeks back in March. Please refer back to my blog about that if you need a reminder. Of course we were all thrilled when he reappeared but I often wondered where was he? I made a few attempts to tune in and ask him without success. So finally I called in the "big guns". Penelope Smith ( www.animaltalk.net ) is a pioneer in the field of animal communication. I had the opportunity to study with her about 10 years ago and now we're Facebook friends. So I explained about Sonny's mysterious disappearance and asked if she would take a moment out of her day to tune into Sonny.
She was happy to do so and here is what Sonny told her.......
" Our owl friend showed me where he was for that 2 weeks. Evidently he met last year’s “children.” I saw him with 2 other owls who are mature but young. It seems unusual according to what people know about owls, but animals have often showed me things that do not jive with behaviorists’ current knowledge but often later are shown to be true. Like us, animals are individuals and don’t do everything according to the “rules” or what people think is genetically programmed or “natural” to that species.
His 2 progeny were having some difficulty capturing prey in an area they had adopted as their home territory miles away from where he and his mate (who you are connected to) are nesting. The 2 owls’ bodies were thin under their feathers. I also got a picture of a lot of dead rodents in the area who were poisoned by humans. Fortunately, the young owls did not eat any poisoned rats/mice. The father owl stayed with them to help them learn better how to survive by ranging further and in wilder areas (away from the poisoned rodents) and he left when they were doing well.
I’ve seen this in other species – a recognition and connection with relatives/family, despite natural territorial instincts, etc. Beautiful.

Are you as blown away as I am? You do not get this kind of information from books about owls. I had asked the resident owl expert in Boulder about this situation and he had no answer. Wow! Is he gonna be surprised when I share what happened!
If this amazes and delights you, please take a moment to check out Penelope's website. There are books, CD's and a quarterly magazine all devoted to the field of animal communication. She also does classes around the country.
Many thanks to Penelope!
