mom is a busy gal!

I finally had a chance to go see the owls last evening, so I was excited! I got over there around 6:30pm and of course Cher was on the nest being a good mom. It was a nice quiet evening, so I sat down on a near by log to enjoy Nature's beauty.
Soon there was some stirring in the nest and Cher was off to get dinner for her and the babies. I stood quietly and soon I could hear the babies in the nest making cute baby bird nosies. I'm pretty sure they were saying " Mom, we're hungry. Feed us"! I timed her and she was back in about 20 minutes with dinner.
She was making sweet cooing sounds to the babies as she fed them. And they were making happy sounds as their bellies filled up.
My best guess is that the baby owls are about 1 week old. According to all the books, they grow very fast. At around 6 weeks they'll start exploring outside the nest. And about 1 week later, they'll begin to fly.
It was getting dark but I sensed she was gonna leave to get more food for those hungry kids. So I waited with my camera ready to get a shot of her leaving the nest. And within a few minutes she took off to get more food and I was happy to get a decent pic of her leaving the nest.

Enjoy!

  1. This is so cool, Alexa, you're getting tons of practice so that by the time the kids are ready to fledge, you'll be an expert on catching them in pics!
