When I went to see the owls on Saturday, I was wearing a t-shirt as it had been 85' that day. Monday evening was windy and quite chilly. So it was back to a hat, gloves and many layers to stay warm.
There were 3 photographers at the nest when I got there around 6:30pm. They were mostly interested in getting good owlet pics but the babies were not cooperative. They were sound asleep. Sonny and Cher were nearby and also taking their time waking up. The photographers left and then the action started!
My friend Georgia and I were the only ones observing and we were treated to a fabulous show!
Cher flew across the path and sat in a tree for a bit. She took flight and landed in some tall grass about
30 feet away from us. Cool! What had she caught for dinner? She flew up into a nearby branch and we got a good look at what she caught. But it was already so mangled, we could not tell what it was. It did seem like some type of small bird.
The owlets started calling for dinner, so Cher flew in and started feeding the kids.

As Cher was feeding them, we heard Sonny making those wheezy, coughing sounds behind us. So we knew he had also caught dinner.
Cher left and Sonny soon flew in and gave the kids more dinner. Again, whatever Sonny had caught was mangled beyond recognition. But he proudly showed us before bringing it to the kids.
After some thought, I wondered if the babies were old enough to start eating semi- solid food. They are a bit over 3 weeks old. So it seems mom and dad just chewed up the food a small amount to help the babies learn how to eat solid food :)
Finally Georgia and I were cold enough to call it an evening. So we said good night to the owls........
What a fun evening!!!!!
