I have been thinking about those burrowing owls at the arsenal all week. I wondered if I got there first thing in the morning, the light might be okay for pics. There were also burrowing owls near Barr lake and I wondered about the GBH nests at my favorite spot. Hmmmmmm
After a bit of thought, I decided to go to the arsenal and then over to see the GBH. Barr lake would have to wait until next week.
I got to the arsenal just after 6am. The light was okay but the owls were sleeping in. Really?
Oh yeah, in case you didn't know, burrowing owls are diurnal. Most owls are nocturnal but these guys are active during the day.
While I was waiting for them to get up, a bison showed up. There is a herd of wild bison in this park which is very cool!
Finally, an owl was up and about but now the light was harsh. Oh well, guess I will have to come by late in the afternoon when the light is at a good angle.....
I drove over to my favorite spot and headed over to see the GBH nests. The kids in nest # 2 are pretty big!
This is nest #3. I could just barely spot at least two youngsters. Yeah, more GBH babies to watch grow up!
Here is nest #1......seems now these two youngsters leave the nest but come back for food. Just like human kids......
I went in search of the wood duck family and there they were. She still has 5 ducklings, so cute!
I spotted one avocet having a nap.....
It was already getting hot, so it was pretty quiet. I was thinking about heading home when I saw an older gentleman birding. I have chatted with him before, so I stopped to say hi. As we chatted, he mentioned the cooper's hawks. Oh yeah! I still had not found them, so I got better directions and hustled over to the area. Bam! There they were......
Seems according to the gentleman, there are 4 young hawks this year!
One of them was enjoying some bunny for breakfast!
These are the coolest birds! And these pics made my day! I will be back to see them very soon!
By the time I got home it was already 90', so Hazel and I headed to the pond for lots of swimming. What a great day!
Thanks for reading......
