Back to My Favorite Place

Yesterday( Saturday) was a spectacular day! Sunny and 72'. But the forecast for today was cloudy and a good chance of rain. Of course the only way to know for sure is to look out the window to see what it is doing. So when I got up this morning, it wasn't raining. So I jumped in the car and headed out to photograph. I had thought about heading out east to Barr lake but there were very dark, thick clouds that way. So I decided to pop down to my favorite spot. I had not been there for at least a month, so it was time to check in and see what was going on.

The moon was in the western sky where the sky was a lovely blue.

To the north, east and south it was cloudy. And then the clouds filled the western sky too.

Check out the cormorant tree. They will be leaving soon to head south for the winter.

It was pretty quiet, so I grabbed some pics of the beautiful trees and skies!

I walked all the way over to the back pond and there were my friends- the northern shovelers. They spend the summer up north and head back down to winter around here, so looks like they are back!

Here's a handsome couple of gadwalls....

     Widgeons!

You can see why they are called shovelers. Look at that bill. It looks like a big ol' shovel...

There were a few of these little guys flitting around. Finally got  decent pic. It is a female yellow rumped warbler. Yes, they are heading south....

I continued on around the lake. I saw some ducks and then noticed one was different....
I did some research when I got home and realized it was a ruddy duck- female. The males are quite spectacular, so I guess I will have to check back and see if he shows up.

I had done a complete lap and stopped at the gazebo to gaze out over the lake. A woman was there with her camera and a cigarette! Yuck! She was polite and tried to hold it behind her back but it didn't work. Oh well, I just stood up wind of her :)
We got to talking and she mentioned she works at Mike's Camera. For those of you that do not live in Colorado, Mike's Camera has several locations around Denver and can be a bit snooty and pricey at times. I have been in the one in Boulder a few times. Anyway she asked me where I get my pics printed and I said Costco. Yes, Costco does an amazing job as they use the same machines as expensive printing companies. She made a face and said how Mike's was gonna have sales, etc etc etc. I just smiled and said I'd check it out....not! I am happy with Costco!
I was taking pics as I talked and got a fun one of this ring billed gull.

I was hoping to see any of the cooper's hawks but instead a kestral showed up for me!

It was fairly quiet, so instead of doing another lap, I decided to stop at Prospect park on the way home. But seems they had a 5k running race going on, so I headed home. The clouds were rolling in fast, so I wanted to Hazel out for some play time before the rain came!
I took my camera with me just in case.....

One of the bald eagles flew by.....

And here's some nice fall foliage with the flatirons in the background.....

Can you say Yellow!

What a fun morning! Thanks for reading!
