What a fun birthday I had! My good friend Pam asked what I'd like to do for my birthday. I said let's go see my owl friends and have lunch together. So Pam came up and off we headed to see the owls. Pam had heard about them but had not met them in person. So I was excited to introduce them to each other.
We stopped at the nest to say hi to Pee Wee and then crossed over the stream to see Horton. How cute was he! He looked like a kitten curled up in the tree. Pam made a great observation. Horton was not an owl in the tree...he was one with the tree. I totally agreed!
Cher was sitting nearby napping, so Pam and I sat down and enjoyed owl energy as we visited with each other. Horton had been sleeping the whole time we were there. As we got up to leave, he opened his eyes to say bye. Very sweet boy owl!
There is another great horned owl nest a few miles away, so I took Pam over there. Those owls are much more reserved then Cher and Sonny. So we shifted our energy to match theirs.
Mom owl was in her nest and we quickly found dad sitting nearby. As we were admiring him, a large bird flew up and landed near the dad owl. Holy sh#*, it was another great horned owl. Now all the books say that great horned owls fiercely guard their territory from other GHO. Ha! So much for that......We quickly realized this was a young, single male owl who just stopped by to say hi. They were friends! That was so cool!
By now it was lunch time, so Pam treated me to some great Thai food for lunch. We chatted, ate great food and then Pam headed home and I took a nap!
After a quick nap, I headed back over to see the owls. Horton was still sleeping but PeeWee was pretty active. Hmmmm was he thinking about busting a move and leaving the nest too? It certainly reminded us of how Horton had acted last week.
I planned to be there about an hour or so. Well 3 1/2 hours later I finally went home. We never did see Horton get dinner but it was a very fun day. A birthday worth remembering for sure!
