I'd barely walked 50 yards when I saw some cormorants and turtles having a meeting :)
It was about midday, so the light was a bit harsh but you get the idea.....
I walked a bit further and saw some beautiful designs in some dead trees...
I chatted with a man walking his dog. He lived nearby so was familiar with the trails. I asked him if he knew of any black crown night herons in the area. I other photographer had mentioned they nested around this reservoir. He wasn't sure but pointed me towards a small pond next to the reservoir. I walked around the small pond, thoroughly enjoying the scenery but didn't see any herons. Oh well, I was having fun. I was walking through a nice wooded section when I startled a bird. She flew up into a nearby tree with her lunch! Holy sh#%! It was a sharp shinned hawk with a bird she just killed. I could not believe my luck. The hawk starting plucking her lunch while I took about a gazillion pics! I was so honored that she allowed me to watch. I was less than 25 feet away from her and she was totally comfortable with my presence. I also got some video which I'll see if I can upload......
Here's the video of the hawk eating lunch..well, actually she's still preparing lunch. She took some time to do lots of plucking.....
This was the coolest thing I've ever seen! First I see a black crown night heron and now this! I was pretty tired by now but wanted to stop at Prospect park on the way home. Stay tuned for part 3......
