And now for something completely different

As you all know, this blog is normally about my wildlife photographic adventures. Well, today I'm writing about something completely different. I had the pleasure of hanging out with my nephew Kevin yesterday and of course I bought my camera.


Kevin is 24 yrs old and a professional photographer. A damn good one too! His ol' Auntie(me) has asked him many questions about photography and he's always been very helpful and quite knowledgeable.
Kevin and his friend Katie are filming a race team as they participate is a race called one lap of america. The website is www.onelapofamerica.com  The race team website is www.amandahennessey.com

The race was coming to eastern Colorado, about 60 miles east of Denver. So of course, I needed to take the time to go see the kids. I don't drive to eastern Colorado much. It's pretty flat and usually windy. So it was fun to see a different part of Colorado other than the mountains. I was almost to the racetrack when I saw this guy in the field. I quickly pulled over and grabbed my camera. He was a bit far away but it was very fun to see this animal. I wasn't really sure who he was, so looked him up when I got home. Seems he is a pronghorn. cool,huh?

I met with Kevin and Katie and they explained how the race worked. You can check out the website for all that info if you're interested. About an hour after I got there, it was their team's turn to go. They would do one warm up lap, 3 hot laps and one cool down lap. Everything seemed fine until they did the first hot lap. Amanda almost skidded out in the first big turn. Hmmm I wondered what had happened as she completed the other laps. Well, when she came off the track she told everyone she had lost her brakes. Whoa! Seems the radiator had a hole in it and sprayed coolant all over the brakes. So they needed a new radiator and they needed it fast before the afternoon races. She got on the phone and tracked one down in Denver- 1 1/2 hours away. They hopped in another car and drove into Denver as fast as they could. Somehow they made it back in time, so Amanda could do the afternoon laps.

Katie drove in to Denver to film the adventure, so Kevin and I hung out and watched the other racers. Here are some pics of the day....

What a fun day! Since Kevin lives in Brooklyn, NY this was special treat to get to hang out with him and watch him work.
