My owl friends have been on my mind, so I knew it was time to stop by and check on them. According to my calculations, the owlets should be around 4 weeks old and big enough to peek out of the nest.
I prefer to go see the owls in the morning because it's nice and quiet. Just me and the owls. In the evenings, there is a good chance there will be quite a few photographers there as these owls are very well known. But I was busy this morning and we have a rain/snow storm coming tomorrow. So I prepared myself to deal with the "paparazzi". But as I drove up, I quickly realized there were no other cars there. Sweet! There are other places to park so I tried not to get too excited.
I walked down the path and as I got closer to the nest I could see there were no other photographers! This was my lucky day!
I got up to the nest and there was Cher feeding the kids. At first I thought there was two owlets but I soon spotted a third one! Whew! They had triplets last year which had to be a ton of work! And now they get to do it again tis year!
Here's Cher's butt as she is feeding the kids. You can see one peeking out.....
Seems Cher was done feeding the kids, so she took the left over rabbit and flew to a nearby tree.
Then she flew to another big cottonwood tree and stashed the leftover rabbit there. Then she flew to her favorite spot across from the nest. From this spot she can keep an eye on her kids and take a break too....
This is the biggest owlet, so he/she was able to peek out into the world......
As it got dark, Cher retrieved the leftover rabbit and headed back to the nest to feed the kids again.....she is one busy mom!
While I love getting pics of the owlets in the nest, my most favorite pics to get are the first day they are out of the nest! So stay tuned...the first owlet should leave the nest in about two weeks or so.
