I had no obligations today, so I thought "what should I do today?" I know, I'll go out photographing! It was 12 degrees when I left the house. So I put many layers on and headed out for an adventure.
I decided to start at Barr lake and see if the eagles were around. As I was driving to Barr Lake, a red tail hawk was sitting on a telephone pole.......
I got into Barr Lake and hiked over to where I've seen them before. Sure enough, there were 2 immature eagles. One flew but the other hung out to get his pic taken.
I headed over to to the south side of the lake and who did I see but some mule deer. They were unsure of who I was but quickly relaxed.
This guy is a northern flicker. They are quite common to see but not so easy to get
photos of. This guy posed very nicely for me.
I saw this cute fox squirrel having breakfast...very cute!
It was pretty quiet, so I headed back. Now the deer were out in the field.....
I stopped by to see the eagles that I found on Christmas day before heading over to my
favorite spot in Lakewood.
So I got to my favorite spot. It had warmed up to 30 degrees and the sun was out, so it
was very comfortable as I walked around. The main lake was mostly frozen with just a
few canada geese. So I made my way over to the small lake. It must be spring fed as it
was not frozen one bit. There was quite a bit of activity.
This male mallard was soaking up the sun......
and then this female hooded merganser joined him
I walked around and soon saw my GBH friend from the other day....
This is a ring necked duck. Not sure why he's called that as you can't see a
ring around his neck.....
And this is a male goldeneye.......
This is a female ringneck duck....
A female kingfisher was flying around. I kept following her around the small lake as
I was hoping to get a pic of her diving into the water for some fish. But no luck.......
As I was chasing the kingfisher around, I found a pair of canvasback ducks. Sweet! I have seen them in other places but have never got a decent pic. This is the male......
I was just thinking about heading home for lunch when something caught my eye. A flash
of color was across the pond. I looked through my camera lens and saw it was a male
wood duck! What the hell! They supposedly migrate south for the winter. Well I quickly forgot about lunch as I followed him around the pond for over an hour. I sent an e-mail to a local bird expert, so we'll see what he says about this wood duck hanging around in December.....
Happy New Year!
