The main lake was mostly frozen with a just a small amount of open water. This mallard was skidding across the ice to get to the open water.
There were plenty of geese coming and going....
This does not look like a comfortable place to sit when it is 12 degrees, huh?
I continued over to the back lake to see who was there. As I came around the turn there was a great blue heron.
He decided to fly over to the other side of the lake so I followed.....
After a few stretches, he began fishing for breakfast.
Here was one of the fish that he caught.......
Besides the GBH there were lots of geese, mallards and goldeneyes. This is a female
goldeneye.
Everything was covered in snow...sooo beautiful!
It was pretty quiet here, so I headed back to Boulder. I was driving down Cherryvale Rd
when I spotted something sitting on an old barn. I pulled over as soon as I could and
walked back down to the barn. At first I thought it was one of those fake owls that people
put on their homes to scare the pigeons. But no.....it was a young red tail hawk all fluffed
up to stay warm. Very cool!
Anyone that lives in the Boulder area gets to look at the foothills of the rockies
everyday. Always breath taking!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
