Happy Birthday!

Today was my birthday so what better way to celebrate than to go out photographing!
I was out the door by 5:30am and headed down to Bluff Lake. I had been there once before last fall. It was pretty quiet then but hoped it would be more active today. Bummer, it was pretty darn quiet. So I headed over to Rocky Mountain Arsenal which was only 10 minutes away.
As I drove in a coyote was running at full speed. Didn't see anyone chasing him, so maybe he was late for an appointment.

The arsenal has a herd of wild bison. They are sooo cool! There are signs everywhere reminding people to stay in their cars while in the bison area. Don't have to remind me! They are huge!

A meadowlark was singing right near the bison. Guess he's not afraid of the big guys....

I continued on to Lake Mary in the Arsenal. I had seen a great horned owl here a few months ago but didn't find him today. I did find a pair of tree swallows picking out their new home....

The Arsenal was pretty quiet so I headed over to Barr Lake. I took some back roads and spotted a GHO sitting near her nest. She took flight as I approached...

The owlet was tucked in the nest ....

Barr Lake was also quiet but did see some cool stuff. Here is a swainson's hawk. He was quite comfortable and posed for me....

The ospreys are back and getting their nest ready. This is a man made platform just for them. You can't see but the platform is in the lake. Their main diet is fish, so they'll have plenty to eat!

I met a nice man who told me about a GHO nest. I found it but it's really high up in the tree.
Both mom and the owlet were checking me out.....

I also stumbled onto a barn owl's nest. She flew out before I knew what was happening. But I made a mental note and will check back to get some pics....

A pretty fun day for sure!
