I was a working girl on Saturday plus it was a cloudy, rainy, snowy day. The weather forecast for Sunday looked perfect to go out photographing. So that was the plan!
I woke up to a very gray and dreary morning. Crap! It was supposed to be a sunny day with temps rising into the 50's. Oh well, it looked like the clouds may part at some point and let the sun shine through. So I packed up my camera stuff and headed out.
I decided to head down to see the wood ducks in Littleton. I had not been there in awhile and had seen some recent pics a fellow photographer posted which jogged the ol' memory.
Lucky me...by the time I got to Littleton, the sun was shining!!!! Yahoo!
The wood ducks winter at this pond as it does not freeze over. So it is almost a guarantee to see them any time of the year. So I walked up to the pond and all I saw were geese and a couple of mallards. Hmmmmm but then as if on cue, a pair of wood ducks flew in and landed right in front of me! Awesome! I could look at these beauties all day!
I took lots of pics, said thanks and headed over to the bald eagle nest I recently found.
Just one the eagles was hanging around the nest. I had barely got settled in and he/she took off.......
Ha! I love action shots, so that was sweet! I hung around for about 10 minutes to see if they would return but no luck. So I moved on to my favorite spot in Lakewood.....
I usually circle the main pond counter clockwise but today I decided to go clockwise. It was a good call as I saw some cool stuff I may have missed otherwise.
I quickly spotted a pair of blue winged teals! Sweet! I do not see them as often as the green winged teals, so it was a nice surprise!
A cute green winged teal was also hanging around.....
I was about halfway around the pond when I spotted a great blue heron. He was doing some fishing when a person walked by with their dog. I was ready as the GBH took off....
A pair of lesser scaup was also enjoying the day!
The northern shovelers were hanging out too!
I often see a kestrel at the northeast corner of the lake and there she was. They are in the falcon family( smallest) and are fierce predators. I hoped she would take flight and maybe catch lunch but it was not to be.....
I decided to do another lap since it was such a beautiful day. I saw some movement in the pine trees and got this guy! It is a bushtit.....they are very tiny( warbler size) and very fast!
I was almost around the lake when I spotted this ring billed gull with lunch! He flew around trying to find a quiet place to eat.....
What a fun morning! I could have kept photographing but Hazel dog was waiting on me. So home I went, had lunch and then did a nice hike with my doggie! A perfect day for sure!
Enjoy!
