So the plan was to get up and be to Barr lake just as the light would be good for photos.
I was up at 5am, took care of Hazel and the kitties, and was on my way. Only bummer was that it was pretty cloudy which meant the light sucked. Before driving into the park, I went to see if the burrowing owls were around. I was a bit shocked to see some heavy equipment and a dirt road where the owls used to nest. Not sure what was going on but I was not happy about that.
I headed into the park and boy was it quiet. Seems all the wildlife was sleeping in on a cloudy Sunday. I did spot a pair of swainsons hawks. This pic would have been pretty good in decent light.
Oh well, my plan had been to head to my favorite spot after Barr lake, so off I went.....
It was still cloudy but the light was a bit better for pics....
One of the avocets was having breakfast.......
And then I spotted this mallard with her ducklings peeking out.....
I continued on around the pond. Many shrubs are flowering and this bee was enjoying it!
As I was watching the bee, I heard wood ducks calling as they flew by. I looked up just in time to see them land in the back pond.
They swam around for a bit displaying some courtship behaviors and then they mated......
Yeah! Looking forward to baby wood ducks!
Canada geese are always around. In fact their goslings should be hatching soon. This one flew by at just the right time......
I decided to go around the pond again. Now the ducklings were awake and very busy.
Dad was also enjoying the day!
I spotted the snowy egret fishing and then he did a fly by for me.....
Here's a handsome kestrel. I must not be near his nest as he did not dive bomb me.....
Whew! It was about 10 am and I was a bit tired. So I headed home to get Hazel out for a swim. We were going by the other owl nest on the way to her favorite swimming hole. So I made a quick stop to check on them.
I got one of them to peek at me.....
Then the other to peek at me......
And finally I got both of them to peek out! Score!
I didn't spot mom or dad but I am sure they were nearby....
The lilacs are just starting to bloom so I had to snap a pic! You can almost smell them, right?
Well, it wasn't the day I expected but it sure was a fun day. Thanks for reading.......
