I had been wanting to check out Barr Lake for a few weeks now. Finally the stars aligned and I made it out there. I never know what I will see out here which makes it very fun!
I headed over to the boardwalk and spotted this cute and young western kingbird. Actually, there were kingbirds everywhere but this one was in a good spot for a pic.
As I was watching, mom flew in with a dragonfly for breakfast......
The other siblings joined in to get a bit of dragonfly....
That was so cool to watch!
I walked about 20 feet and spotted a kestrel family. This youngster wanted some breakfast!
Mom was nearby .......
I continued on and spotted quite a few bullocks orioles. Their young have fledged, so the adults were very busy keeping an eye on the kids and feeding them too.
A great blue heron was fishing.....
And the snowy egret was busy too....
This is an eastern kingbird. They were all over the place!
I headed back to the car and just as I was leaving, an osprey flew by.....
I had seen a posting about some burrowing owls at the Rocky Mt. Arsenal Wildlife Refuge. So I decided to drive over to check it out. I had gotten some nice pics of the owls last summer just outside of Barr Lake. But when I looked for them in May, there was all this road construction going on. So I figured they went somewhere else. Imagine my surprise to see them as I drove by to go to the arsenal! The light was way too harsh for good pics but I had to give it a go. I am so happy they came back, so I will return for better pics!
By now, it was around 10am which means the sun was high and very harsh! But it was worth it to stop by to check out the owls at the arsenal. Oh yeah! There were at least 10 owls if not more. I will be back!
I drove over to lake Mary and walked around. This little guy was singing his heart out! He is a common yellow throat. Very cute!
What a great morning! Stay tuned for more burrowing owl pics soon!
