Barr Lake Trip

I had not been out to Barr lake for a couple of months, so it was time to see what was going on. Hazel and the kitties were very happy when I was up at 5:30am cause that meant an early breakfast!

Since I was driving east, I hoped for an amazing sunrise. Of course that depends on if there is some nice cloud formations. The sunrise was nice but not spectacular...oh well.

This time of year they are doing bird banding near the barn owl nest so I did not even check on them. I will next time for sure......

You know it's a slow day when the first pic I take is of a flower. Sure I love flowers and enjoy taking pics of them but my first love is wildlife and it was not happening. There was lots going on but everything was just too far away for any decent photos. Here's what I saw but did not get a pic of......
a bald eagle flew by, there were lots of pelicans, pied billed grebes, red tailed hawks, ring billed gulls and great blue herons.

There were hundreds of western grebes..........

And a few great egrets. They are about the same size as a great blue heron.

Then I spotted this little one. He was a bit far for a decent pic but finally got this. It's a say's phoebe...

There were a few young meadowlarks perched in a tree.....

What a quiet morning. I hiked all the way to the gazebo and back without seeing much.
So as a last resort, I head over to the feeders behind the Nature center. Even the sparrows and finches all flew away before I could get a pic. This say's phoebe was nice enough to pose for me.

And this squirrel posed too.....

Well I still had hopes of getting some good pics as I drove over to check out the DIA loop. On the way there I drove by where the burrowing owls are during the summer. I had thought they had all headed south but I did spot one way out in the field. But as you guessed, he was way too far away for a decent pic.

A young swainson's hawk was perched on the telephone pole. He was calling to a sibling that was perched about 100 yards away. That was very cool!

I did drive the DIA loop and saw nothing! Oh well, it was a beautiful morning to be out and about. So I headed home to get Hazel dog out for some swimming!

Thanks for reading.......
