Button rock Hike

Hmmmmmm, I wanted to go out photographing this morning but the weather report had me reconsidering. Some reports said snow. Some said rain and some said just cloudy. So I decided to take my camera and Hazel dog to Buttonrock. It's not far from home. Hazel would have fun! I could get some pics and if the weather crapped out, we could head home easily.

We had not been to Buttonrock since late summer. It's a challenging hike with lots of short, butt kicking climbs. So the plan was to just do part of the sleepy lion trail to get my hiking legs back in shape.

Well, when we got to the trailhead I saw a sign reporting that the spill way bridge was finished! Sweet! That wasn't supposed to be done until the spring. I wanted to check it out, so the easy hike was aborted and we set out for a long hike.

We headed up the road excited to see the new bridge. Over three years ago, this whole area had been severely damaged by the floods. So I was happy things were getting back to normal.

We crossed the bridge and hiked up the reservoir. The water is very low this time of year, so the rock formations were easily accessible.

Now Hazel dog is a purist! She only likes to chase tennis balls! That's usually fine as I have plenty of balls. But I did not have one today as I was not planning to hike up to the reservoir.
So Hazel resigned herself to swimming after a stick instead of a ball.......

After enjoying a swim, we hiked down the dam trail and picked up the sleepy lion trail. You get some spectacular views of Long peak from here.

You maybe wondering why the trail is called the sleepy lion trail. Well, the legend is that a mountain lion was spotting sleeping near the trail many years ago. I'm very sure lions live around here and while I'd like to see one, it's not really necessary......safety first!

Just for fun, I had to get a pic of Hazel under this sign......

Whew! The original plan was to hike for about 1 1/2 hours. It ended up being a 4 hour hike and my legs felt it! I'm now planted on the couch hoping Hazel will make dinner tonight....LOL!

Thanks for reading!
