A VERY Slow Day

It is that time of year......the birds that were here all summer are beginning to head south. But the birds that winter here in Colorado have not arrived yet. So it is a bit of a crap shoot as far as scoring some good pics. I was hoping to catch a bunch of warblers, etc that are migrating through but it was not to be.

I started the day at Barr Lake. I was still hoping to see some baby barn owls but had no luck. I did some more reading about barn owls and learned they roost in their nest all year( unlike great horned owls). So now I am pretty sure there are no baby barn owls...bummer!

Here was a deer family as I walked to the barn owl nest......

A very cute chickadee posed for me....

And a snowy egret flew over me.....

And the chukars were hanging out on the roof of the nature center.....

Oh well, not much was going on at Barr lake so I decided to drive over to my favorite spot. I had not been there in about 3 weeks.......

It was almost 9:30am when I got there so the light was pretty harsh. But I still had to attempt to get some decent pics.

This is GBH nest #3. The kids are looking very good!

There were quite a few snowy egrets around......

And these young cormorants went crazy when a parent showed up with food.....

I headed around the lake. The avocets have already gone south. And there were no sandpipers or killdeer around. I looked for the young wood ducks but did not see them.

I did see this goldfinch.......

I was almost around the lake and spotted this young GBH. Looks a bit scruffy!

I looked for the coopers hawks but again, I struck out. Oh well, it was a beautiful day to be out enjoying nature. It will probably be like this for a few more weeks before we get some wintering birds around here. So I headed home to get Hazel out for a swim! A great way to spend a Sunday!

Thanks for reading!
