Yup! I have spring fever! Not the typical fever you get hoping for spring after a long winter though. It does not pay to get spring fever in Colorado. And I have lived here long enough to know that. Why? Because March is our snowiest month and April is the 2nd snowiest month. So even though we are having some nice warm days, I do know that snow is coming!
But what I do have is photographing spring fever( I coined that term). I realized it today while out photographing. I went down to my favorite spot this morning to check out what was going on. I thought about the swainson's hawks but realized it was still too early for them to return from their winter location. I checked out the swallow nesting boxes. Oh yeah, too early for them too. How about my avocets? Oh yeah, again way too early for them to return.
So I tried to enjoy what was around today! Here's a handsome bufflehead.....
And here is the female considering him as a mate.....
There are a few early birds, namely the great blue herons. Two nests are already claimed and it's still February....
The shovelers are still around. They will head north to breed and raise their young.
Here is the male ring necked duck......
There are plenty of geese around. I was so close to this guy that his wings didn't fit into the frame....
A lone hooded merganser looking for a lady friend....
I was about halfway around the loop when I spotted this GBH in the small creek.....
Otherwise it was pretty quiet, so instead of doing a second lap, I decided to stop by Prospect park on the way home. But as I drove by Crown hill I decided to make a quick stop. Not much was going on except this kestrel who agreed to pose for me....
I finally got to Prospect Park and checked out the main pond by the parking lot. Not much was going on except this ring billed gull. I noticed he was doing laps around the pond looking for some breakfast. So that gave me a few chances at some flight pics.....
Then I headed towards Tabor lake. I could see a golden eye duck and some cormorants in the distance but they were too far for any pics. Then I happened to look to the left and spotted this red tail...
He was not in a great place for pics but then he flew a few trees over to a much better spot....
I was hoping for some take off pics and he did not disappoint.......
I continued around but all was quiet except for this hooded merganser enjoying the beautiful day.....
It's always a great day when I can get out to photograph and the red tail hawk was icing on the cake!
Thanks for reading!
