I arrived around 6:30pm. There was one other photographer and a group of about 6-8 people just enjoying the owls. The group left shortly after I arrived, so it was just me and the other photographer.
Cher had been sitting near the nest. She flew off to get dinner and Sonny was down the path grooming and getting ready for the night.
The baby owls were especially cute as you'll see by my pics. There was much wing flapping, calling for dinner and just looking cute for the camera.
The other photographer was packing up to leave and the action started! Cher flew to a nearby branch with a meadow vole in her mouth. She alternated it between her mouth and talons. How proud she was of her catch. She made sure I got some good pics and then she delivered dinner to the kids. There was still quite a bit of daylight, which helped me get these fun pics.
Meanwhile, the other photographer quickly unpacked to get some pics. He stayed for a bit longer and finally left. So I had them all to myself for a bit............
After Cher fed the kids, she pulled out this rabbit pelt from the nest and flew to a nearby branch.
At first, I thought she was doing some house cleaning. You know....do the dishes, make the beds, remove dead carcasses. I soon realized she was picking through the pelt to get any remaining meat. She would work on the pelt for a few minutes, fly to another branch and repeat the work on the pelt. Then she flew back into the nest and fed the kids some yummy regurgitated rabbit.
Time stood still as I enjoyed all this activity. My friend Karen walked by and I shared what had happened. We stood chatting and enjoying the beautiful, warm, quiet evening.
Finally it was time to head home. I couldn't wait to get home and see how my photos came out. Please enjoy!
