OMG! This will be a very long entry. So get comfortable.........
So much has happened the last couple of days that I want to share, so hang on and here we go!
Thursday evening I was visiting the owls. The larger owlet- we named him Horton, was quite active. Hmmm...... was he getting ready to leave the nest? We estimated he had another week in the nest but he made us wonder......
As usual, everyone left before the show started, which is fine with us owl keepers. So Georgia and I were there to witness Cher bring home a very large rabbit! She flew from branch to branch getting food ready for the kids. My flash batteries had died but I got a cool pic of Cher with just the light from the flashlight. Georgia is the best lighting director ever :)
We were having fun watching the show but a storm was coming up quick, so we hustled out of there before the downpour started.
Friday was Earth day, so I decided to celebrate by going on a photo shoot. I headed over to Prospect Park in Wheatridge. I had been there Wednesday afternoon to see the mandarin duck. While there I met a nice older couple. The woman was a professional photographer and proceeded to give me a tour of the area. She showed me where the wood duck nest was and talked about the many species of water fowl she had seen here. The wood duck wasn't around but I quickly filed the nest location in my memory banks :)
So as I said, I headed back to Prospect park. I got some nice pics of the mandarin duck and then went in search of the wood duck. I found the nest area, glanced around and there was the wood duck swimming in the stream near his house. Got a few pics and moved on to explore all the trails.
I was observing some small birds in a tree and all of a sudden they scattered. I wasn't sure why as I was far away from them. All of a sudden a small hawk( sharp shin ) appeared with a frog in his talons...cool! He landed on a small tree and now I understood why the birds had scattered.
While walking around the park, I met a nice couple and their dogs. They shared another cool place to see birds. It wasn't far from Prospect Park, so off I went to find the place they mentioned.
OMG! What a beautiful area smack in the middle of suburbia! There many ducks on the lake. As I walked around I saw 2 ibis, an egret and then the capper was 2 avocets mating!
I headed home to see how my pics came out. I figured I'd edit my pics and enjoy a quiet evening at home. Well, there was an e-mail from Georgia that Horton had left the nest!
Holy Sh#%.....I quickly got ready and headed over to see this. It was about 4pm, so the light was pretty good. I got a couple of cute pics of Horton and then got some of Sonny flying around. Mom and dad were on high alert as Horton was more vulnerable to hawk and crow attacks. So it was a fun time.
I pulled myself away to go home and feed Molly and the kitties. I grabbed a snack and quickly headed back to watch the show. My hope was to get a pic of Cher feeding Horton in his new location. I was there until 9pm and finally gave up as I was so tired from the long day. Georgia and Karen were gonna stay for a bit to see it happen.....I haven't heard anything, so I'm guessing they finally gave up too.....
So here are some pics from the day. Enjoy!
