Wild Turkeys and friends

My good friends Pam and Jeff live in the foothills just west of Denver. There's lots of wildlife living in the foothills and most everyone finds their way to this place. They know they are safe and respected, so they all hang around. Some of my favorite photos have come from hanging out at Pam's house. So the other day she calls to let me know that about 8 wild turkeys have been hanging around. Oh yeah! I headed up there on Friday morning to hopefully get some pics.
They have a long, steep and winding driveway. So I took it slow. As I rounded the last turn, there was a mule deer with her two youngsters. They weren't even spooked by my car.
So of course I grabbed my camera and got this pic of one of the youngsters.

As I was taking pics of the deer, Jeff came to the front door to let me know the
turkeys had just arrived and were around the side of the house. Sweet! I walked around the house to see the turkeys pecking away.....

The turkeys checked me out as I walked up the path. They knew I was there to admire them, so they kept eating and gave me a few good pics too.

Four  bucks showed up and gave me these great shots!

Most of the song birds have left for the winter. The stellar's jay and hairy
woodpecker spend the winter here, so they were enjoying food from the feeders.

Sophie is their dog. She hung out with me while I got all these pics. As you can see
she is a very good dog. She just watches the deer and turkeys but will not chase them...

What a fun morning! I have never seen wild turkeys, so this was quite a treat!

  1. Hi there. Great pictures of Wild Turkeys. I have visited Denver in the past, you are doing a very good job of documenting that area's wildlife. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and over the past year, my wife and I have come upon several Wild Turkeys in this area. We even came upon a hen with her baby turkey flying up into a tree. Fortunately, we had our camera with us and got some good video and pictures. We have posted them for anyone interested at: http://frametoframe.ca/photo-essay-wild-turkey-sightings-ontario

Last Friday, we lucked out and came upon a Northern Saw-Whet Owl out in the bush. You will find our pics, and video at http://frametoframe.ca/photo-essay-northern-saw-whet-owl-sighting
